How to Make a Matcha Latte (Hot or Iced)

A hot matcha latte with a milk-foam heart next to an iced matcha latte, a bamboo whisk and matcha powder

A matcha latte is easy to make at home: whisk the matcha into a smooth paste with a little hot water, then add milk. It takes about 5 minutes and no special skills. Below is the classic hot version, an iced version, and an even quicker version with NeuroMatcha, our instant mushroom matcha.

Why this recipe works

The key is the paste. Matcha does not dissolve like instant coffee; it is a fine powder that clumps if you pour milk straight onto it. Whisking it first with a small amount of hot, not boiling, water gives you a smooth, frothy base, and water that is too hot tends to make matcha taste more bitter. For why, see what matcha tastes like.

Ingredients (makes 1 latte)

  • 1 level teaspoon matcha powder
  • 2 tablespoons hot water (not boiling)
  • 3/4 cup milk or oat milk
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons honey, maple syrup or sugar (optional)

Equipment: a small sieve and a bamboo whisk or handheld milk frother.

Instructions

  1. Sift the matcha. Sift the matcha into a mug or small bowl to break up any lumps.
  2. Make the matcha paste. Add the hot water and whisk in a quick zigzag with a bamboo whisk or handheld milk frother until smooth, with a fine foam and no clumps.
  3. Heat the milk. Warm the milk until it steams, without letting it boil. Froth it if you like a foamy top.
  4. Combine. Pour the milk into the matcha, then stir in sweetener to taste and serve.

Iced matcha latte

  1. Whisk 1 level teaspoon of sifted matcha with 2 tablespoons of room-temperature water until smooth.
  2. Fill a tall glass with ice and pour in 3/4 cup of cold milk; stir in sweetener now if you use it.
  3. Pour the matcha slowly over the top for a green layer, then stir before drinking.

Quick version with NeuroMatcha

NeuroMatcha mixes in with a quick stir, so you can skip the whisk. Stir 1 tablespoon of NeuroMatcha into 2 tablespoons of warm water until dissolved, then add 3/4 cup of steamed or cold milk. Because it already contains coconut milk powder and MCT oil, it tastes creamy even with a lighter milk, and its ingredient list has no sweetener, so sweeten it to taste (Product Facts).

Tips & variations

  • Too bitter? Use a little less matcha, let just-boiled water cool for a few minutes, and add a touch of honey or vanilla.
  • Extra foamy: Froth the milk separately and spoon the foam on top.
  • Flavor twists: Add vanilla, a pinch of cinnamon, or try our Strawberry Matcha Latte and NeuroMatcha Flow-State Iced Latte.
  • Caffeine: plain matcha has about 14 to 35 mg of caffeine per gram, so the amount in your cup depends on how much you use; weigh your teaspoon once to estimate it. One tablespoon of NeuroMatcha has about 8.8 mg, since a 2-tablespoon serving has 17.64 mg (Product Facts). For the full comparison with coffee, see does matcha have caffeine?
  • Timing: morning or early afternoon, since matcha contains caffeine.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How do you make a matcha latte at home?

Whisk 1 level teaspoon of sifted matcha with 2 tablespoons of hot, not boiling, water until smooth, then add 3/4 cup of steamed milk and sweeten to taste. For an iced latte, use cold milk and ice.

Can I make a matcha latte without a bamboo whisk?

Yes. A handheld milk frother works well, or you can shake the matcha and water in a small jar with a tight lid until smooth.

What milk is best for a matcha latte?

Any milk works. Whole milk and oat milk make the creamiest lattes; almond milk is lighter. Use whatever you like the taste of.

How much caffeine is in a matcha latte?

It depends on how much powder you use. Plain matcha has about 14 to 35 mg of caffeine per gram, so weigh your teaspoon once to estimate your cup. One tablespoon of NeuroMatcha has about 8.8 mg.

Why does my matcha latte taste bitter?

Usually because the water was too hot, there was too much powder, or the matcha was not whisked smooth. Let boiled water cool for a few minutes, use less powder, and add a little sweetener.

Can I make an iced matcha latte?

Yes. Whisk the matcha with 2 tablespoons of room-temperature water, fill a glass with ice and cold milk, and pour the matcha over the top.
