My Background

My name is Alison Hartwell. I’m 35 years old, an American nutrition educator, and based in Portland, Oregon.

I grew up around my mother’s neighborhood café. That experience taught me early on the value of affordable meals, seasonal ingredients, and accommodating different dietary needs.

After studying food science, I began working in recipe testing and food publishing. I became interested in adapting everyday recipes to different ingredient preferences and making food labels easier to understand. Those experiences shaped my approach to healthy eating: practical cooking skills, flexible planning, and meals people actually enjoy.

Later, I moved into content development for a consumer nutrition app. My work included building recipe databases, creating ingredient guides, and developing educational content about supplements and food sensitivities. Along the way, I became particularly interested in the gap between persuasive wellness marketing and the evidence behind a product.

Today, I explore four connected areas:

  • Healthy Eating and Inflammation: I start with everyday foods when planning meals and carefully explain research on dietary patterns and inflammation, without promising that any particular food will cure symptoms.
  • Supplement Literacy: I look at ingredients, doses, quality testing, potential interactions, and whether a supplement serves a clear purpose.
  • Allergen Awareness: I focus on reading ingredient labels, recognizing the risk of allergen cross-contact, and distinguishing food allergies from intolerances and personal preferences.
  • Practical Biohacking: I use small, measurable experiments to explore sleep, movement, meal routines, and wearable data, looking at which changes are useful in everyday life.

My specialty is organizing information. I compare supplement labels, summarize research with linked sources, develop meal options around stated dietary restrictions, and look for patterns in food and lifestyle logs. I treat those patterns as clues to investigate, rather than diagnoses.

My weakness is curiosity. Sometimes I get a little too enthusiastic about a new tracker or a complicated routine, only to realize that I’ve given myself more work to do. That brings me back to a question I often ask: “Was this useful enough to keep?”

About Me

Hi, I’m Alison Hartwell, a nutrition educator based in Portland, Oregon. I explore healthy eating, supplements, and practical biohacking that fits into everyday life.

My background combines food science, recipe development, and nutrition-app content. I’m especially interested in the questions that arise when everyday eating meets wellness advice: What does this supplement actually contain? How can I plan meals around a food allergy? What does research about inflammation really tell us?

Here, we’ll explore those questions together. I share approachable recipes, supplement-label breakdowns, ingredient guides, and small experiments with everyday routines.

I provide the sources behind my explanations, identify uncertainty, and flag questions that need a qualified healthcare professional or pharmacist. A food log or wearable can offer useful clues, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

My approach starts with ordinary life: your budget, your schedule, the foods you enjoy, and the habits you can realistically maintain. There’s room for curiosity—and for deciding, after trying something, that an expensive gadget or elaborate routine isn’t worth keeping.

Bring your questions, your supplement label, or your weekly grocery list. We’ll work toward a clearer next step together.
